Nepal used to have some restricted area for the travelers in the past however all the parts of Nepal now are opened for the trekking and those restricted areas are still called restricted area trek in Nepal. Mostly, the northern part of Nepal from east to west were restricted in the past and now it has been opened for the trekking and now, the trekking in these areas are available under strong rules and regulations. Trekkers need to obtain special trekking permits to trek to have trekking in these areas and those special trekking permits must obtain through a registered trekking company like Outfitter Nepal Treks and Expedition and there should be at least 2 people in the group to obtain the trekking permits for these areas.
The trekking in those restricted or controlled areas possible only through the registered trekking companies and the policy of controlled tourism in these areas are applied to preserve the culture and nature of the areas and to keep cultural heritages live. The areas of the Upper Dolpo, Rara, Mustang, Manang, Manaslu, Kanchenjunga etc are under controlled area.
The Restricted areas offers great views of the Himalayas live cultural heritages, great landscapes for the trekkers and you will amaze yourself when you go for trekking in those areas. There used to be only the camping trekking in the past however some areas including the Manaslu, Kanchenjunga and Mustang has now basic lodges as well so, one can do the lodge/teahouse based trek in these areas and please find some of the planned trekking programs in restricted areas of Nepal.
